family festival fun in downtown saint paul

At the end of every school year, the Flint Hills Family Festival welcomes tens of thousands to Rice Park for free, family-friendly entertainment as well as world-class shows inside the Ordway’s Music Theater and Concert Hall. Students from across the state of Minnesota will take field trips to Saint Paul to see a show, dance in the park, and flex their creative muscles with dozens of fun activities.

And the fun doesn’t stop there—once the weekend comes, the park opens up to the public for two days of family fun both in the Ordway and just across the street in a park packed with vendors and artists well into the evening. It’s one of the Ordway’s biggest undertakings each year, which means I’ll be churning out brochures, out-of-home advertising, digital ads, and coloring pages like nobody’s business.

Designing for this event always means I’m trying something new, whether it’s illustrating larger-than-life sea creatures for a photo op or optimizing our digital ads for placement on the Xcel Energy Center marquees. Every year, there are new opportunities to make this event bigger and better than before, and I love that I get to contribute to the overall art direction of this large-scale event.
