To help illustrate my point, I’m going to look at the illustrations for the 15th anniversary book covers. Kazu Kibuishi was approached by Scholastic to redesign the Harry Potter book covers for a special edition box set. Unlike Mary GrandPré, who illustrated the books as they were published, Kazu Kibuishi was working with a complete series, with a goal of designing them as a set.
Kibuishi’s illustration style is also much different from Mary GrandPré. While she was typically a children’s book illustrator, Kibuishi mostly illustrates graphic novels, and so his style is more “cartoony,” like something you would see in an animated movie. His design is atmospheric and gives you a quiet sense of the fairytale fantasy feel of the wizarding world.
